Implementing efficient multi-object auction institutions: An experimental study of the performance of boundedly rational agents

چکیده
We study three alternative versions of the Vickrey (1961) auction when bidders have multi-unit demands: Vickrey’s original static sealed-bid auction and two dynamic implementations of the same auction: with and without dropout information reported during the auction (Ausubel, 1997). Although implemented by a weaker a weaker solution concept, behavior in the dynamic Vickrey auction with dropout information comes significantly closer to sincere bidding than either the static Vickrey auction or the dynamic auction without dropout information. This suggests a tradeoff between the simplicity and transparency of a mechanism and the strength of its solution concept for less than fully rational agents. Comparing outcomes between auction institutions provides insight into the behavioral mechanism behind this result.

Implementing Efficient Multi-Object Auction Institutions:
Abstract We study three alternative implementations of the Vickrey (1961) multi-unit demand auction: Vickrey’s original static sealed-bid auction and two dynamic alternatives, with and without public dropout information reported during the auction (Ausubel, 2004). Although implemented by a weaker solution concept, behavior in the dynamic Vickrey auction with the public dropout information comes...
متن کاملA Comparative Study of Multi-Attribute Continuous Double Auction Mechanisms
Auctions have been as a competitive method of buying and selling valuable or rare items for a long time. Single-sided auctions in which participants negotiate on a single attribute (e.g. price) are very popular. Double auctions and negotiation on multiple attributes create more advantages compared to single-sided and single-attribute auctions. Nonetheless, this adds the complexity of the auctio...
متن کاملIntention-aware planning under uncertainty for interacting with self-interested, boundedly rational agents
A key challenge in non-cooperative multi-agent systems is that of developing efficient planning algorithms for intelligent agents to perform effectively among boundedly rational, self-interested (i.e., non-cooperative) agents (e.g., humans). To address this challenge, we investigate how intention prediction can be efficiently exploited and made practical in planning, thereby leading to efficien...
متن کاملSelecting Efficient Service-providers in Electric Power Distribution Industry Using Combinatorial Reverse Auction
In this paper, a combinatorial reverse auction mechanism is proposed for selecting the most efficient service-providers for resolving sustained power interruptions in multiple regions of an electric power distribution company’s responsibility area. Through this mechanism, supplying the required service in each region is assigned to only one potential service-provider considering two criteria in...
متن کاملA comparison of multi-object auction formats
We compare the performance of three alternative multi-object auction institutions: simultaneous ascending auctions with the hard closing rule, simultaneous ascending auctions with the soft closing rule, and simultaneous first price sealed bid auctions. Among the three formats, the simultaneous ascending auction with the soft closing rule is the most efficient and produces outcomes closest to th...
